REFRACTIVE LENS EXCHANGE

Refractive Lens Exchange (RLE) is a procedure to reduce or eliminate dependence on glasses. It is an alternative to LASIK vision correction and may be the procedure of choice for those over the age of 40 who desire freedom from glasses at all distances. It corrects nearsightedness, farsightedness, astigmatism and even presbyopia. Presbyopia is an age related progressive condition that decreases the ability of the natural lens in the eye to focus at different distances. This typically requires individuals over the age of 40 to become dependent on reading glasses or bifocals segments in their glasses to see things at near, like reading, sewing, phone and computer activities. 

While laser vision correction like LASIK corrects vision by reshaping the cornea, RLE corrects vision by replacing the eye’s natural lens with an intraocular lens (IOL) of the appropriate power customized to each individual eye. Each IOL is customized using the patient’s unique ocular measurements and the IOL calculated for each eye is implanted into the eye during an 8-10 minute surgery. With the use of TORIC astigmatism correcting IOLs, the new EYHANCE technology and/or the LenSx Laser, your vision can be fully corrected allowing you to enjoy the best DISTANCE visual acuity that your eye has the ability to see without the need for prescription glasses.  Implanting PRESBYOPIA CORRECTING IOLs will allow excellent DISTANCE & NEAR vision and drastically reduce the need for reading/magnifying glasses. Refractive Lens Exchange is a short outpatient procedure performed in our own ambulatory surgery center, Innovative Eye Surgery Center, and most patients return to their daily activities the next day.
